The "First Look" - breaking tradition

Updated: Apr 5, 2018

A First Look is when a future bride and groom see one another before the wedding ceremony in a very special, and private, moment. In doing so, you will be breaking tradition, and as such, this trend may not be for everyone. However, there are some very distinct reasons why a First Look may be right for you. Here are eight :

1. Documenting that special moment

Being able to truly enjoy that first glimpse of each other without all the guests watching can be priceless. And, imagine being able to stage that special moment documented by your photographer. 2. Extra Time

As a photographer, a First Look can mean more time for photography without having to rush. That also can translate to you not feeling rushed as well. The First Look can become a great time to capture special posed shots - both traditional or just fun. This can extend to the bridal party and possibly family.

3. Alone Time

This time during the First Look may be one of the few times during the day’s events that you as a couple will get to be alone together to share a few precious moments.

4. Taking Advantage of Daylight

Depending on what time of year a wedding is or how late the ceremony starts, a First Look can allow the photographer to take advantage of natural light photography, golden hour or possibly sunset.

5. Attending Cocktail Hour

Generally, most posed photographs are taken during the cocktail hour. It just becomes expected that you will be rushed off somewhere not to be seen again until your introduction and first dance. As such, the bride and groom often never gets to attend their own cocktail hour. If the majority of photographs are taken before the ceremony during a First Look, you are given the flexibility to attend some of the cocktail hour with your guests. 6. Calming nerves.

Weddings can be stressful and a First Look can slow everything down and help calm the nerves. The First Look is a less formal time and you have the opportunity to really showcase your fun personality. It becomes a good practice to help you feel and look relaxed and be more comfortable for the rest of the photo session.

7. Looking Your Best

Your will look your best during the First Look - you will have fresh hair, makeup, clothing. You will look incredible!  As the First Look is done before the ceremony and reception, your hair will still be in place, you haven’t cried off any mascara, you won't have lipstick traces from that kiss from your aunt, and neither of you will have had the chance to wrinkle your clothes.

8. Getting More Photos

Scheduling time for photos during a First Look can allow for more photo opportunities in general.  Weddings can be unpredictable and there are often unexpected delays. To recover lost time, often it is the photo session's time that is reduced.

If you do decide a First Look is for you, look at examples online and we will work with you to capture images that express your personality.

Allow at least 1/2 hour prior to the Ceremony for your First Look - and have fun!
